Blue Monday: A History of Happiness

Blue Monday: History of Happiness talk with Kevin O'Neill

Twenty years ago, a research psychologist of minor acclaim announced that Monday, January 21, 2005, would be the saddest day of the year. The press release included a mathematical formula and the catchphrase “Blue Monday.” The product of wonky science and marketing hubris, the popularity of Blue Monday today presents an opportunity to think critically about a historical phenomenon that has become something of a cultural obsession: the pursuit of happiness.

Join Dean O’Neill on the twentieth anniversary of Blue Monday—Monday, January 20, 2025—to consider a specific history of happiness and what it might mean for our lives.
